 Ben Partridge is an award-winning Saxophonist and Composer from Cheltenham, UK and now based in Birmingham. A graduate with first-class honours from the Jazz course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, studying with highly regarded tutors Mike Williams, John O'Gallagher, Ed Puddick and Mike Gibbs. Highlights included being asked to arrange a Mike Gibbs' piece for a concert celebrating his 85th birthday alongside some of the leading composing lights to have come out of Birmingham, and the premiere of his all-new Big Band project 'The Enigma Suite' in February 2023. He is currently writing for a new band, "Sixways," which debuted at Birmingham's Spotted Dog in November 2023. His sound has been influenced by jazz legends such as Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider and Melissa Aldana, as well as more modern acts like Big Thief and Radiohead.

In this entertaining and colourful concert Durrant explores the mysteries of La Ruta Mangoreana, uncovering the beauty of Paraguayan music and sharing stories from the central southern cone of South America. He also explains how all this began for him on a number 26 Brighton corporation bus.

One of the most in-demand young musicians of the vibrant Birmingham jazz scene, James Borland’s distinctive warm tone and characterful improvising speak both to his love of the jazz tradition, but also the forward-thinking melodicism of contemporary New York figureheads such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Immanuel Wilkins. His quartet brings together an impressive young rhythm section who share his love of free-flowing, exciting jazz music, featuring sought-after bass and drum team Ben Love and Kai Chareunsy, and BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Nick Manz on piano.

The James Borland Quartet have been playing regularly over the past year developing a strong musical connection and a deep understanding of James’s compositions. For their performance at Corn Exchange they will be joined by tenor saxophonist George Crowley, one of the stars of the London jazz scene. The group will premier an exciting suite of new compositions, written especially by James during his time working with George as part of the Jazz Central Mentoring Scheme.

The Richard Fairhurst Trio

"Award winning pianist Richard Fairhurst, is a powerful keyboard virtuoso capable of both meditation and funkiness, but he is as sophisticated a composer as he is a player. He is one of the UK’s most inventive pianists." The Guardian

Steinway artist and BBC Jazz Award winner Richard Fairhurst is one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists and composers. He released his first album to critical acclaim when just 19 and has worked with many of the top names in jazz today.

Richard released three albums as leader of the band The Hungry Ants which also featured renowned saxophonist Iain Ballamy. He received a scholarship to study jazz and improvised music at the New School University in Manhattan, New York. He has been a Steinway International Artist since 1998 and at the age of 20 he reached the final of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Solo Piano Competition.

Richard was commissioned to write music for a new sextet at the Cheltenham International Jazz Festival This music was released on his fourth album as leader ‘Standing Tall’ which won the prodigious BBC Jazz Award for Best New Work.

He has released three highly acclaimed duet albums with Berlin based Trumpet player Tom Arthurs, Mesmer, Postcards From Pushkin and One Year. The duo went from strength to strength with a BBC commission for the City of London Festival and a performance at the BBC Proms in 2009. They also performed at Ronnie Scott’s for Jazz on 3‘s programme celebrating the best of Jazz in Britain.

His first piano trio recording Triptych featuring Danish bass player Jasper Hoiby and New York drummer Chris Vatalaro was released in 2010.

Richard performed in a two-piano setting with the late, great John Taylor at the Steinway 2 Pianos Festival/PizzaExpress Jazz Club several times as well as John Taylor’s 70th birthday concert, broadcast live on Radio 3’s Jazz Line- Up programme. They released their album Duets on Basho Records in 2015.

Ben Carter is a saxophonist and composer based in Birmingham. A graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Carter writes and performs jazz music for a variety of small and large ensembles, including his own Jazz Quintet. Inspired by the sound of classic saxophonists like Paul Desmond and Art Pepper, he aims to bring this sound to a more modern environment, incorporated into free-flowing and complex compositions.

The Ben Carter Quintet is a modern jazz quintet that brings a youthful and refreshing energy to the Birmingham jazz scene. Made up of exciting young musicians including Tom Henery (guitar), Conor Bastible (piano), Thomas Marsh (bass) and Henry Wakley (drums), the group is led by Ben Carter (saxophone) and captures audiences with their vibrant feel and group interplay.

This Swedish band is part of the new movement in European Jazz bringing Nordic rhythms and atmospheres to life. Örjan Hultén, one of Sweden's foremost saxophonists and improvisers, is a musical explorer always looking for the next challenge. His critically acclaimed quartet Orion was conceived from Örjan's impulse to create something altogether fresh in 2009. The quartet has recorded four albums and the latest, Minusgrader this year, and has received stunning reviews

In his compositions Örjan Hultén moves effortlessly across boundaries and musical genres. Here and there Middle Eastern and Balkan traits can be heard while one can distinguish traces from Wayne Shorter or Joni Mitchell in other parts. Örjan Hultén’s Orion is featuring four of Sweden’s top musicians, each of them a well-known and celebrated musician/bandleader in his own right. This is the first time the quartet is touring the West Midlands. This gig tis part of a tour around other venues in the West Midlands, organised by Birmingham Jazz for the Jazz Midlands.

As a Saxophonist, he has performed in live and studio settings with artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Tim Minchin, Bonobo, Frank Turner, The London Jazz Orchestra, The Hackney Colliery Band, The Ambient Jazz Ensemble and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
